My folks are from rural southeast Missouri (i.e., in and near the “bootheel”) and I grew up hearing this expression used a little bit differently than the first two examples; more in the context of hospitality. For example, “he’s about as welcome as a turd in a punchbowl.”

For more euphemisms and expressions like this, I recommend a nice little booklet (it’s only 42 pages long) by Tom Ladwig called, “How to Talk Dirty Like Grandad”.

Boo. Me neither. It’s too true, and most days too close to home also. Our entire pay hierarchy in this country is bass-ackwards: we pay lawyers and scummy business people six and seven figures, and the people who supposedly hold it all together like teachers, cops, nurses, paramedics and EMT’s, firefighters, daycare workers… (okay, a bit of personal bias there) do so for peanuts. (mighty sigh)

Interesting-as-hell case in point. A good doctor friend of mine, 2 weeks ago, in our very ER, had a patient who came in asystolic, multiple rounds of ACLS (shocks, drugs, etc) couldn’t restart his ticker. 4 ultrasounds showed ZERO cardiac activity. Bereft family comforted, patient in viewing room x 5 hours, cold and dead and family long since gone home. The dude started breathing again. Normal sinus rhythm. Moved to the ICU. Woke up. Went. Freaking. Home.

5 hours dead, and now not. I have no explanation, none.

I’ll blog on my own space about this in more detail. I just thought it fit here.
