My first opportunity to become one of “those” Little League parents is fast approaching: we’ve signed Aaron up for t-ball. Well, technically he’s signed up for t-ball clinic–he’ll be old enough for the real deal next year.
The clinic sounds like a good way to introduce kids to the sport, though. It meets every Saturday, just like the big kids do for games. They have a few stations set up to practice fundamentals like hitting, throwing, and catching. The kids are rotated through the stations for about an hour, then they have snacks and juice at the end. They also get hats and shirts, just like if they were on a team in the older leagues.
Youth sports is definitely different out here. There are actually three youth athletics groups in the immediate area around my town, and many more not too far outside it. Unlike the one-and-only option I had, we actually had to pick which league sign up for. I’m not sure if signing up for the one we did makes a statement, or dooms my son to a life of second-tier sportsdom. I guess time will tell on that one.
